Programs: Education
HIV Alliance's Educational Services promote a healthy community for all by increasing awareness about the need for prevention and harm reduction services in Lane County, teaching compassion for those living with HIV/AIDS, educating community members about HIV transmission and risk assessment, and promoting the agency's work within the community.
Our volunteer-based community educators are available for presentations in alcohol and drug treatment centers, community and church groups, local business, medical offices, and partners working in the social services. We offer positive speaker presentations and an HIV 101 workshop that covers the basics of HIV transmission and risk assessment. Both the positive speaker presentations and the HIV 101 workshops complement, but do not take the place, of comprehensive sexuality education.
Our presentations are free although donations are encouraged and accepted. A sliding scale fee of $25-$150 is charged for presentations to community groups, business, health care providers, or presentations at the college level. To schedule see contact information below. |

Speakers in the Schools (SIS)
Our Speakers in the Schools program has been providing positive speaker presentations in Lane County for over ten years. SIS volunteers are HIV positive. Their compelling presentations tell the story of their lives before, during, and after their diagnosis. The presentations are designed to increase compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS, address the complex reasons people are at risk for HIV, and inform the community about the importance of harm reduction and prevention services. Speakers are also trained to answer questions and provide information about HIV transmission, risk assessment, and safer-sex techniques. The presentations are between 1-1.5 hours. Please contact Amy Allen volunteer@hivalliance.org to schedule a speaker. Please schedule at least two weeks in advance. |
HIV 101 Workshops
The interactive HIV 101 Workshop is taught by community education volunteers. It provides basic information about HIV/AIDS including transmission, demonstrates the proper use of barrier methods, discusses safer-sex and harm reduction methods, and promotes compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS. The presentations are between 1-1.5 hours. Please schedule at least two weeks in advance.
These presentations can be adapted to fit the needs and age level of the audience. They are an excellent complement to a comprehensive HIV/AIDS curriculum and help instructors fulfill the Oregon Department of Education Infectious Diseases requirement.
